The young man was repeating to his girlfriend how lovely she was, and she kept pretending as if it didn’t matter. She probably tried to avoid the hit of emotions. She persisted in ignoring his words of admiration, as if she was really bothered by them, or as if they didn’t really matter and it hadn’t made any effect on her. She continued to talk about other things. Chatty, in good mood, friendly, but not responding to his flattering comments. I could not see their faces, as I was showing my back to them. Even though unable to see their faces, I could tell about the dynamics, and never mind her verbal response, one could sense that the words of the young man pleased the young woman.
This event brought up the thought of our tendency to ignore the compliments and positive feedback from others. When we engage in our daily conversation, be it with our loved ones or with people in our work setting, most of us tend to enter a routine and so do our words, expressions, meaningful and supportive observations that could or should be communicated to the others.

When we engage in our daily conversation, be it with our loved ones or with people in our work setting, most of us tend to enter a routine and so do our words, expressions, meaningful and supportive observations that could or should be communicated to the others.
So much of the positive communication is lost. We seem to be getting poorer in our mutual expressions of support and admiration. Have we forgotten to wonder and appreciate? Have we got so much fear to face the emotional side of ourselves? Are we really so self-sufficient as we pretend to be?
How many times have we thought of how nice it would be if a significant or important person in our lives, or the one that we look up to, would dedicate us a word of support and appreciation? Or admiration? Not that all of us would need this to continue living, but having it, may elevate our mood and bring more colors into our daily routine life.
I am not saying that we should dwell on this wish, only that we might have put it too much into the dark chamber of our mind. We tend to convince ourselves that we are self-sufficient and that we do not need that stuff, but my question is: ‘Wouldn’t life be nicer for all if we would let this exchange in?
As parents, friends, colleagues, team-leaders, don’t we all long for a better world?
Why not starting with these simple moments of complimenting our children, partners, colleagues? Why not being the first in the chain of positive ambience promoters?
It may seem insignificant, but these are the little bits of communication that can elevate one’s mood, push the motivation up to want to perform better at work and be nicer to people who surround us. Positive Comments of only one word can already move mountains.
Accept the positive remarks from others. Embrace the good will of the person who is giving you compliments. Enjoy sharing the moment, and move on with a smile. Your day will be nicer. It is worth trying.
